Stefan Jonsson is a Professor and Head of Division at Linköping University's Department of Culture and Society (IKOS), within the Division of Migration, Ethnicity and Society (REMESO). He holds a Ph.D. from Duke University (1997) and has held fellowships at the Getty Research Institute and visiting roles at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on critical cultural theory, migration, colonialism, and the role of art in understanding democracy and collective identity.
Jonsson's notable works include Eurafrica: The Untold History of European Integration and Colonialism (2014) and Den otyglade skönheten (2022), exploring art's insights into democracy. He leads projects like 'Collective Agency in an Era of Authoritarian Automation' (VR-funded) and collaborates with visual artist Anna Ådahl on artistic research. His work bridges academic and public discourse, frequently appearing in Swedish media.
Awards include the Albert Bonniers Essay Award (2020) for Där historien tar slut. He teaches in Ethnic and Migration Studies programs and oversees grants such as CHANSE–Forte's 'Digital Infrastructures and Sovereignty' (2023–). His research addresses postcolonial legacies, racism, and the intersection of digital technology with societal boundaries.
