Stefan Gruber is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at Carnegie Mellon University, serving as Track Chair of the Master of Urban Design (MUD) program and Director of the Remaking Cities Institute. He holds a courtesy appointment at the School of Design and leads the David Lewis/Heinz Endowments Directorship of Urban Design and Regional Engagement. Gruber’s work focuses on spatial justice, commoning practices, and bridging top-down planning with bottom-up urban transformations. He is a licensed architect in Germany with degrees from RWTH Aachen and Columbia University.
- Education: Dipl.-Ing. (summa cum laude) from RWTH Aachen, MSAAD with honors from Columbia
- Teaching: Leads design studios on commoning, urban acupuncture, and planetary urbanization
His research explores commoning as a framework for equitable urban futures, curating international exhibitions like "An Atlas of Commoning" and contributing to publications in Arch+, Le Monde Diplomatique, and Bracket. Gruber’s design practice, STUDIOGRUBER, has received accolades including the Europan competition win and recognition as a Young Viennese Architecture firm. Recent collaborations at THE NEW INSTITUTE focus on decommodifying housing and infrastructures of commoning.
