Stefan Geisen is an Assistant Professor at the Laboratory of Nematology, Wageningen University & Research. His research focuses on soil biodiversity, protists, microbiomes, and their roles in ecosystem processes such as carbon cycling and plant health. He explores how soil microorganisms and protists influence agricultural sustainability, disease suppression, and environmental resilience.
Key research interests include protist diversity, microbial predation, and the impacts of land use changes on soil communities. His work bridges ecology, microbiology, and agricultural science, addressing global challenges like climate change and food security.
Geisen has co-supervised several PhD candidates, including Hu Shuai, Teunissen Jorrit, van Himbeeck Robin, and Wang Yirui. He contributes to projects such as CREEPIES, investigating microbial predation in eroding soils, and Disentangling Soil Biodiversity for Optimized Intercropping.
He serves on editorial boards for journals like the European Journal of Soil Biology and ISME Journal, and actively presents at academic conferences. His datasets, such as EcoFINDERS soil protist metabarcoding, provide critical resources for soil biodiversity research.
