Dr. Stefan Facsko serves as the Head of the Ion Beam Center at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). His research focuses on advancing ion beam technologies for nanoscale material modification, surface patterning, and the study of 2D materials. He leads a team exploring applications in nanotechnology, semiconductor physics, and plasmonics, with a particular emphasis on self-organized nanostructure formation and defect engineering in materials like graphene and SiC.
Facsko's work integrates multidisciplinary approaches, leveraging advanced instrumentation such as helium ion microscopy and synchrotron-based techniques. His research spans from fundamental studies of ion-surface interactions to applied innovations in data storage and nanodevice fabrication. Key projects include the development of ultra-dense data storage systems using atomic defects and the creation of functional nanostructures for optoelectronics and catalysis.
His laboratory, the Ion Beam Center, is a hub for cutting-edge ion beam analysis and material synthesis, collaborating on EU initiatives like the REMADE@ARI project to combine multiple analytical facilities. Recent studies highlight breakthroughs in nanopatterning Ge and MgO surfaces, magnetization dynamics in nanostructures, and the synthesis of core-shell nanomaterials through advanced ion beam processing.
