Dr. Stefan Clemens serves as Professor in the Department of Physiology at East Carolina University, where he has advanced from Research Instructor (2005) through Associate Professor (2015-2021) to his current role. His academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Pharmacology from the University of Bordeaux and postdoctoral training at Georgia State University and Emory University.
His research centers on spinal cord neural networks governing sensory-motor functions and autonomic processes. The Clemens Lab investigates pathological mechanisms in Restless Legs Syndrome and chronic pain, with particular emphasis on dopamine-opioid interactions and neuromodulation. Using in vitro electrophysiology, the team explores neural circuit dysfunctions to develop novel therapeutic strategies.
Dr. Clemens' translational work has yielded significant recognition:
- US Patent for Restless Legs Syndrome treatment innovations
- US Patent for chronic pain therapeutic approaches
His lab maintains active research programs developing biomarkers for opioid responsiveness and anti-fibrotic treatments for neural scarring. Dr. Clemens has mentored numerous undergraduate and graduate students in spinal cord research using animal models, with funding supporting patented therapeutic developments.
The Clemens Lab pursues four strategic objectives: identifying RLS spinal mechanisms, creating novel pain treatments, establishing opioid-response biomarkers, and evaluating anti-fibrotic therapies for neural injury recovery.
