Stefan Bird-Pollan is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kentucky, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He previously held roles as Associate Professor (2016–2023) and Assistant Professor (2010–2016) at the same institution, alongside a Lecturer position at Harvard University (2007–2010). His education includes a PhD in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University (2008), a D.Phil. in Modern Languages from Oxford (2003), and a BA in History from UC San Diego (1996).
Dr. Bird-Pollan’s research focuses on German Idealism, particularly Kant and Hegel, and their intersections with ethics, aesthetics, and political philosophy. He explores how theories of the subject relate to ethical frameworks and has written extensively on figures like Adorno, Freud, and Fanon. Key works include Hegel, Freud and Fanon: The Dialectic of Emancipation (2015) and co-edited Hegel’s Political Aesthetics (2020). Recent projects examine populism through psychoanalytic and philosophical lenses.
His academic contributions span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference presentations. Notable awards include multiple Fulbright grants and a DAAD Fellowship. Bird-Pollan has organized international conferences on critical theory, Hegel, and Adorno, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue.
Research interests further include the philosophy of mind, critical race theory, and the application of psychoanalysis to political phenomena. His work bridges historical and contemporary debates, emphasizing ethical and emancipatory dimensions in philosophy.
