Stefan Bachmann is a visual artist and Senior Lecturer at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he has taught in the Department of Scenography since 2000. His academic appointment focuses on drawing techniques including nude drawing, freehand drawing, architectural drawing, and digital image processing. As a Dipl.-Ing. (Diplom-Ingenieur), he brings architectural training to his artistic practice and teaching methodology.
Bachmann's research interests center on experimental drawing as an expanded practice that bridges figuration, improvisation, and abstraction. He views drawing as a mental space connecting observation, memory, association, and spatial perception. His work explores the dialogue between the expected and the unforeseen, treating paper as a stage for unlimited creative possibilities. He emphasizes the importance of looking closely beyond preconceptions, as reflected in his teaching philosophy: 'Schau genau hin! Du meinst zu wissen, wie es aussieht, und zeichnest, was du meinst zu kennen. Aber schau noch mal genau hin, es sieht anders aus, als du denkst.'
Bachmann's artistic publications reveal consistent exploration of experimental drawing techniques across multiple contexts. His 2022 publication AKT/NUDE represents a significant contribution to contemporary drawing practice, featuring 653 illustrations across 432 pages. His work shows evolution from architectural representation toward more abstract and experimental forms, while maintaining strong connections to spatial perception and bodily experience. Recent projects like 'Game of the Living' (2023) and 'Windstriche' (2024) demonstrate continued innovation in drawing methodology.

Bachmann's teaching extends beyond the university through numerous workshops at private art academies across Germany and Austria. His drawing excursions to locations including Éveux (La Tourette Monastery), Ronchamp, Bologna, Trieste, Karlovy Vary, Bratislava, and Ljubljana demonstrate his commitment to experiential learning. The testimonials from students and workshop participants consistently highlight his ability to create supportive environments that foster creative freedom, with comments noting how he 'finds the sensitive balance between knowledge transfer and freedom' while providing 'gentle persistence' to help students break through creative barriers. His labs and creative spaces function as experimental zones where students explore the boundaries of traditional drawing through mixed media approaches and conceptual frameworks.
