Stanley Toops

Stanley Toops was Professor of Geography at Miami University with joint appointments in Geography and International Studies. His research centered on cultural geography and development in Central Asia, particularly China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Field research investigated tourism development, ethnic relations, and cultural change in minority peripheries. His influential dissertation established frameworks for understanding ethnicity and development in Xinjiang.

Teaching emphasized world regional geography, East Asian studies, and international development. Mentored graduate students conducting global field research until his retirement in 2022.
