Stanley Buffonge serves as a Bristol Futures Research Development Fellow at the Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol. His research centers on diabetic cardiomyopathy, focusing on endothelial glycocalyx damage and diastolic dysfunction.
He earned a BSc and a PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Bristol in 2023. His doctoral research, titled "Identifying matrix metalloproteinases as a therapeutic target to protect the coronary microvascular endothelial glycocalyx in diabetic cardiomyopathy," was supervised by Professors Foster, Madeddu, and Satchell.
Buffonge's research interests include the molecular pathways of diabetic heart disease, particularly the role of angiopoietin-1 in restoring glycocalyx integrity and improving cardiac function. He employs mouse models to investigate diastolic dysfunction and potential therapeutic interventions for diabetic cardiomyopathy.
His recent publications reflect a dual expertise: a 2022 Diabetologia article on glycocalyx restoration in diabetic mice and a Nature Reviews Cardiology commentary addressing diversity in cardiovascular research. These works highlight his contributions to both basic science and social issues in medicine.
