Spencer Johnston is a Governing Body Fellow and Deputy Senior Tutor (Admissions) at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge. He serves as Director of Studies for Philosophy and Linguistics and is an honorary Research Associate in the Faculty of Philosophy. His roles include overseeing undergraduate/postgraduate admissions, disability advocacy, and supporting students in philosophical and linguistic studies. He lectures on logic for Theoretical and Applied Linguistics and the Philosophy Faculty.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degrees in Religious Studies and Philosophy (Honours) from Tyndale University College & Seminary, Canada.
- MSc in Logic from the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation, University of Amsterdam.
- PhD from the University of St Andrews.
Research Interests: Spencer specializes in the history and philosophy of logic, particularly medieval modal and non-classical logics. He explores historical intersections between logic, theology, natural philosophy, and the evolution of philosophy of language. His work bridges medieval intellectual history with modern linguistic and philosophical frameworks.
Advising & Advocacy: He advises students on admissions and disability support, runs weekly applicant meetings, and champions accessibility initiatives at Hughes Hall.
Labs/Teams: Engaged with the Faculty of Philosophy and Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at Cambridge.
