Soyeon Kim is a Research Fellow in Korean Studies at Monash University. She is actively involved in two major research projects funded by the Academy of Korean Studies: 'Monash Korean Studies Beyond Borders' (2023–2028) as a Chief Investigator and 'Creating a Nexus at Monash for a Stronger Korean Studies' (2017–2022) as an Associate Investigator. Her research focuses on intercultural communication, sociolinguistics, and Korean language education.
Key research interests include language choice in multicultural contexts, translanguaging practices among Korean diaspora communities, pragmatics of Korean conversation, and educational materials development for language learners. She has contributed to peer-reviewed journals like Journal of Politeness Research and co-authored textbooks such as Korean Conversation Gambits.
Her work bridges theoretical linguistics with applied contexts, examining how language reflects cultural norms and social identities. Current projects emphasize building global academic networks for Korean Studies and enhancing interdisciplinary research collaboration.
