Dr. Soumyalekshmi Nair serves as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Therapeutics Theme Leader at the UQ Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR), Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland. Her work focuses on the molecular mechanisms of extracellular vesicles in pregnancy-related conditions and chronic diseases.
Her educational background includes:
- Veterinary and Animal Sciences degree (2009), India
- Master of Veterinary Science in Animal Biotechnology (2011), India
- PhD in Medicine (2021), The University of Queensland
Dr. Nair's research centers on understanding how extracellular vesicles regulate key signaling pathways in diseases such as gestational diabetes, obesity, and ovarian cancer. Her work bridges basic science discoveries with clinical applications, particularly in developing EV-based biomarkers for early disease detection and therapeutic targets. She has made significant contributions to understanding the role of placental extracellular vesicles in maternal-fetal communication and metabolic regulation during pregnancy.
Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on extracellular vesicle biology across multiple disease contexts, with particular emphasis on gestational diabetes mechanisms, biomarker development, and therapeutic applications. The research shows progression from basic characterization of EVs in pregnancy to more complex investigations of their diagnostic and therapeutic potential.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Research Training Scholarship from the University of Queensland
- Prestigious awards from the Society of Reproductive Investigation
- Awards from the Australian and New Zealand Society for Extracellular Vesicles
As Therapeutics Theme Leader, Dr. Nair guides research direction in developing clinical applications of extracellular vesicle research. Her work has implications for diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions in women's health conditions.
She conducts her research within the Exosome Biology Lab at UQCCR, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams focused on translating basic science discoveries into clinical applications. Her leadership in the Therapeutics Theme connects laboratory research with potential clinical implementations.
