Soraya Nour Sckell

Soraya Nour Sckell is an Associate Professor at the NOVA School of Law (Faculdade de Direito, NSL|FD) and a Senior Researcher at CEDIS (Centro de Investigação e Desenvolvimento sobre Direito e Sociedade). She also conducts research at the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon. Her work focuses on cosmopolitanism, legal philosophy, and social/political theory, with notable contributions to the understanding of Kantian ethics and contemporary global justice frameworks.

Dr. Sckell holds dual PhDs in Philosophy (University Paris Nanterre and Goethe University Frankfurt, 2012) and Law (University of São Paulo, 1999). She has held postdoctoral positions at institutions including Saint Louis University, Humboldt University Berlin, and the Collège International de Philosophie in Paris, where she directed the Cosmopolitan Research Programme (2013–2019). She is currently Vice-President of the Humboldt France Association.

Her research interests include cosmopolitanism, Kantian theory, legal sociology, human rights, and identity politics. Recent work explores the intersections of cosmopolitan ethics, global governance, and cultural poetics. She has published extensively on topics such as cosmopolitan law, the philosophy of Alexander von Humboldt, and the sociological foundations of legal systems.

Key awards include the Wolfgang Kaupen Prize (2018) for sociological contributions to legal studies and the Franco-German Friendship Prize (2012). She actively participates in international conferences and peer-review activities, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary dialogue.

Her academic roles include supervising PhD students, directing research projects on cosmopolitan justice, and contributing to transnational academic networks. She has taught at universities in Brazil, Germany, France, and Portugal, fostering global academic collaboration.
