Professor Sophie Williams is a leading academic in Medical Engineering at the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, University of Leeds. She serves as Director of Research and Innovation in the School of Mechanical Engineering, focusing on impactful research in healthy aging and orthopaedic biomechanics.
- Education: BEng (University of Liverpool), PhD (University of Leeds)
- Research Vision: Pre-clinical assessment of musculoskeletal interventions to optimize patient outcomes through anatomical simulation and clinician-industry collaboration
Her work spans hip replacement biomechanics, orthopaedic implant wear analysis, and experimental simulation models for surgical validation. Recent articles highlight advancements in dual mobility cups, wear prediction algorithms, and patient-specific geometric modeling of impingement.
Key scientific awards include:
- Royal Academy of Engineering Fellowship
- EPSRC Healthcare Technology Challenge Award
- DePuy Synthes Research Chair in Hip Technology
Sophie supervises PhD researchers and teaches modules like Biotribology and Biomaterials. She co-directed the Leeds Orthopaedic Biomechanics CPD course and actively contributes to the British Hip Society and Orthopaedic Research Society.
