Sophie Warny is a Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Louisiana State University (LSU), holding the AASP Professorship in the Center for Excellence in Palynology. Her research focuses on palynology, paleoclimatology, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction, with a particular emphasis on Antarctica, North Africa, Colombia, and the Gulf of Mexico. She earned her PhD from the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, in 1999.
Her work integrates palynomorph analysis (spores, pollen, dinoflagellate cysts) to study ancient climates, sedimentary processes, and biogeography. Notable projects include reconstructing Antarctic climate during the Miocene Climatic Optimum, analyzing the Messinian Salinity Crisis in the Mediterranean, and investigating the Chicxulub impact's environmental effects. She also applies palynology to forensic science and oil exploration biostratigraphy.
Warny teaches courses such as Historical Geology and Micropaleontology, and leads a lab conducting fieldwork in polar and tropical regions. Her research has produced over 100 publications, emphasizing Antarctic sediment cores and coastal environmental dynamics. Despite no explicitly listed awards, her leadership in palynological studies underscores significant contributions to the field.
Her advising and grants focus on interdisciplinary projects like ANDRILL's Antarctic drilling initiatives and Gulf of Papua paleoenvironmental studies. She collaborates internationally, contributing to initiatives like the NSF-funded CAREER program on Antarctic climate variability.
