Sophie Shevick is an incoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh, part of the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, starting in Fall 2025. She leads the Shevick Group, a new research team focused on advancing synthetic organic chemistry through innovative methodologies involving main-group elements such as silicon and sulfur.
Her research centers on the development of new synthetic methods grounded in physical organic principles, with an emphasis on radical chemistry and stereoselective synthesis. The group aims to construct complex molecules, including natural products, with precise control over connectivity and three-dimensional structure, enabling applications in medicine, materials science, and agriculture. Students in her group will receive rigorous training in synthetic techniques and mechanistic understanding.
The published works of Dr. Shevick highlight her expertise in catalytic hydrogen atom transfer, dual-metal catalysis, and asymmetric synthesis. Her articles, appearing in top-tier journals like ACS Central Science and Journal of the American Chemical Society, demonstrate a strong trend toward methodological innovation and mechanistic insight, particularly in the manipulation of challenging carbon-heteroatom bonds and stereochemical outcomes.
