Sophie Pointer is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Flinders University's College of Medicine and Public Health and a Full Member of the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI). She serves as Deputy Director of the Research Centre for Injury Studies within the Prevention, Promotion and Primary Health Care Cluster and works with the National Injury Surveillance Unit, which is a Collaborating Centre of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Dr. Pointer specializes in injury epidemiology with particular expertise in Indigenous injury, child injury, patient safety, and injury policy. Her research focuses on analyzing hospitalization data, identifying injury patterns across different populations, and advocating for evidence-based injury prevention strategies. She has developed significant expertise in examining health disparities related to socioeconomic status and Indigenous status in injury outcomes.
Her recent publication activity shows a strong focus on comprehensive injury statistics reports for the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, with multiple significant publications in 2019 covering topics from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander injury patterns to mobility scooter-related injuries and cycling safety. These works demonstrate her methodological expertise in injury surveillance and data analysis.
Dr. Pointer is recognized as a media expert in injury-related topics and maintains active engagement with both academic and policy communities. Her work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being, particularly in addressing health disparities and improving safety outcomes for vulnerable populations.
