Dr. Sophie Payne is a Lecturer in German at the University of Reading, specializing in German language and culture, linguistics, and feminism. She currently teaches modules including LA1PG1 – IWLP German Stage 1, LA1PG2 – IWLP German Stage 2, and ML3LP – Language and Power. Her research explores gender roles in media, feminist protest movements, and cross-cultural linguistic practices. Payne holds a PhD in German Studies from the University of Reading, preceded by an M(Res) and BA in German and Italian.
Research Interests: German language pedagogy, feminist discourse analysis, multimodal communication, and comparative linguistics. Her work combines empirical studies with cultural critique, such as analyzing LEGO marketing’s gender stereotypes and contrasting compliment response patterns between German and Italian students.
Teaching & Leadership: She leads the Languages for All German program and coordinates marketing strategies for language education. Past teaching includes modules on German post-war migration and discourse analysis for applied linguistics students.
