Professor Sophie Lebel is a clinical psychologist and full Professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, at the University of Ottawa. She maintains active research affiliations as an Affiliate Investigator at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (since 2014) and Researcher at the Institut du Savoir de l'Hôpital Montfort (since 2011).
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Université de Montréal (2004)
- B.Sc. (Honours) in Psychology, McGill University (1997)
Lebel's research centers on psychosocial oncology, with pioneering work in fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) measurement and intervention. She developed the Ottawa clinical FCR instruments and co-created the evidence-based Fear of Cancer Recurrence Therapy (FORT), validated through multiple RCTs. Her program spans cancer survivorship, caregiver experiences, health disparities (focusing on Black Canadian and Indigenous populations), and cultural adaptations (e.g., FORT-Mx for Mexican survivors). She founded the international FORWARDS research network through a 2015 CIHR-funded colloquium.
Analysis of her 2023-2025 publications reveals three dominant trends: (1) Expansion of FCR research into underserved populations and global contexts, (2) Development of caregiver-focused interventions, and (3) Integration of psychosocial care into primary/specialty oncology systems through survivorship care plans and transition protocols.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology Early Career Award (2015)
Lebel currently supervises three graduate students and leads CIHR-funded projects examining FCR mechanisms and implementation. She chairs the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Special Interest Group for the International Psychosocial Oncology Society and serves on editorial boards for key oncology journals.
She directs the Interdisciplinary Psychosocial Oncology Research Group and Laboratory, which coordinates multi-institutional collaborations including the FORWARDS network and cultural adaptation initiatives across North America.
