Sophie Hartles is a PhD candidate and Lecturer at the University of Warwick's Centre for the Study of the Renaissance. Her doctoral research, funded by Midlands4Cities, examines the violent culture of the Italian Renaissance through the lens of the beffa, a cruel practical joke. Supervised by Dr. Jonathan Davies and Prof. Ingrid De Smet, her work integrates cultural history, microhistory, and the history of emotions to analyze judicial records, literature, and cheap print.

Research focuses on elite male sociability, gender dynamics, and the intersection of laughter and violence in Renaissance Italy, with case studies in Bologna and Venice. She has presented at conferences such as the Renaissance Society of America (Puerto Rico, 2023) and the University of Toronto (2023). She co-organized conferences like the 2024 RSA panel on Renaissance performances and held the Newberry Research Fellowship in 2024.
