Sophia O'Brien is a Lecturer in Law at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), affiliated with the School of Law and Society. She holds a PhD from Bond University, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Griffith University, an LLB (Honours) from Griffith, and a Bachelor of International Relations majoring in International Political Economy, also from Griffith.
Her research focuses on international law, constitutional law, and human rights law. Her doctoral thesis addressed impunity for grave human rights violations and international legal responses. She has conducted research in Beijing on regional strategic challenges, including the Korean Peninsula and South China Sea disputes.
She is an active academic contributor, co-founding the UniSC Chapter of Scholars at Risk (SAR) to defend academic freedom globally and representing UniSC on SAR’s international advisory committee. Professionally, she is admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland and has litigation experience. She also serves on non-profit boards like Generation Innovation.
Awarded the Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Endeavour Award and BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance Award, she is a member of the Australian Law Teachers’ Association. Her work bridges legal scholarship with community engagement, emphasizing human rights and regional security dynamics.
