Dr. Sonya L. Jakubec is a Professor at Mount Royal University's College of Health, Community and Education, specializing in community mental health nursing and research. Her work focuses on the interconnection between supportive environments and wellbeing across the lifespan, with particular emphasis on community approaches to palliative care and health equity in natural settings. Dr. Jakubec holds a PhD from the University of Calgary, MN from University of Victoria, BHSc(Nursing) from Auckland University of Technology, and a Nursing Diploma from University of Alberta Hospitals.
Her research examines health and wellbeing benefits of park inclusion for diverse populations, equitable palliative care access, and ecological applications in nursing practice. Publications demonstrate consistent focus on community health interventions, mental health promotion through nature-based programming, and innovative approaches to grief support.
Dr. Jakubec contributes to professional communities as Education Consultant for the Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley, Steering Committee Member for Health Parks Health People Forum, and Board Director for Miistakis Institute. She maintains adjunct appointment at Dalhousie University.
