Dr. Sonja Hegasy is Deputy Director at the Leibniz Center for Modern Oriental Studies (ZMO) in Berlin since 2008, with a research focus on the Middle East and North Africa. She chairs editorial boards for the Goethe-Institut and serves on scientific advisory councils for institutions like the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and ZEIT-Stiftung.

- M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies (1990, Columbia University)
Her interdisciplinary research spans memory politics in Lebanon and Morocco, political culture in Arab monarchies, and civil society dynamics during the Arab Spring. She co-edited The Social Life of Memory (2017) and led the DFG-funded 'Transforming Memories' project (2012-2014).
Recent publications analyze youth value transformations, cultural diplomacy, and Moroccan truth commissions. Articles emphasize historical narratives, postcolonial identity, and state-society relations. Her 2019 Europe and the Mediterranean contribution examines transnational memory spaces.
Awarded a Fulbright Fellowship (2016), Hegasy lectures internationally on topics including Arab democratization, Islamic reformism, and EU-Mediterranean relations. She co-organized exhibitions like Cairoscape (2008) and Sights of Memory (2013) with ZMO partners.
