Associate Professor Sonia Roitman is an urban sociologist and planner specializing in urban inequalities, housing policies, and grassroots urban planning processes. She holds dual appointments at The University of Queensland's School of the Environment and School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Her research focuses on Global South cities, particularly Indonesia, Argentina, Uganda, and Samoa, examining issues like gated communities, disaster planning, and informal urban practices.
Her notable publications include the Routledge Handbook of Urban Indonesia (2023) and influential articles on urban governance and planning instruments. She has been recognized with the 2011 AESOP Best Published Paper Prize.
