Somdev Banerjee serves as Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Illinois Institute of Technology's Lewis College of Science and Letters. He holds key advising roles including Undergraduate Adviser, Accelerated Masters Program (AMP) Adviser, and serves on the Illinois Tech Pre-Medicine Advisory Committee, demonstrating his significant involvement in student academic development and pre-health career guidance.
His research expertise spans across organic chemistry with particular focus on synthetic methodology development, natural product synthesis, and medicinal chemistry applications. His work demonstrates strong emphasis on creating novel synthetic routes for biologically active molecules, particularly in the area of antiviral drug development targeting HIV-1 RNase H activity through innovative azaBINOL class compounds.
Research interests include asymmetric catalysis using organocatalytic approaches, development of Yamada-Otani condensation methods, synthesis of complex natural products like Lycopodium alkaloids, and investigation of axially chiral compounds with pharmaceutical potential. His laboratory work bridges fundamental synthetic chemistry with practical applications in drug discovery.
Publication analysis reveals consistent productivity from 2012-2019 with focus areas including: development of new synthetic methodologies for pharmaceutical scaffolds, biological evaluation of antiviral compounds, structural optimization of drug candidates for improved properties, and mechanistic studies of chemical reactions. The work demonstrates progression from fundamental reaction development to applied medicinal chemistry.
