Smitha Rao

Smitha Rao is an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Affiliated Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University. Her research focuses on MEMS, microfluidics, tissue engineering, and nanomaterials for biomedical applications. She holds a PhD and MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. Previously, she worked in industry and returned to academia in 2012, managing a laboratory and teaching courses like biomedical design and micro/nano technologies.

Research Interests:

Rao's lab investigates micro- and nano-structures' impact on cellular behavior, particularly in cancer metastasis, wound healing, and heavy metal toxicity. Projects include microfluidic platforms for cancer studies, nanofiber-based scaffolds for tissue engineering, and sensors for biomedical diagnostics. Her work bridges engineering and biology to address challenges in healthcare and environmental health.

Awards & Grants:

Recipient of NSF funding for the REU site InSPIRES (2025), focusing on integrated circuits, sustainability, and community engagement. Previously directed the TECH SCEnE program, combining engineering research with community impact projects like water quality testing and smart adhesives.

Leads the Biomedical µDevices Lab at MTU, collaborating with departments like Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Engages in interdisciplinary projects with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community on environmental and biomedical challenges.
