Siri Gloppen

Siri Gloppen is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Bergen (UiB) and currently serves as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. She holds a dual affiliation with the Department of Government and the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), leading the Centre on Law & Social Transformation (LawTransform). Her research focuses on law as a political strategy, particularly exploring 'lawfare'—the strategic use of legal tools in political battles. Gloppen has led over a dozen international research projects funded through competitive grants, addressing topics like LGBTQ+ rights, climate governance, and judicial responses to autocratization.

Her work bridges theory and practice, emphasizing collaboration with practitioners such as judges, policymakers, and activists. Key contributions include conceptualizing abortion and queer lawfare, analyzing legal strategies in autocratic contexts, and studying the constitutionalization of social rights (e.g., water access). Gloppen’s interdisciplinary approach spans political science, law, anthropology, and public health, with global case studies in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia. She has published extensively, including edited volumes on climate justice and sexual rights lawfare.

Gloppen’s academic leadership extends to organizing annual conferences like the Bergen Exchanges on Law & Social Transformation, which integrate researchers, students, and practitioners worldwide. Her teaching spans PhD courses on lawfare and climate governance, as well as undergraduate modules on courts and political theory. Beyond academia, she advises international organizations like the World Bank and Norad on legal frameworks for social transformation.
