Dr. Siobhan Walsh serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Land Sciences at South East Technological University (SETU), where she is affiliated with the Eco Innovation Research Centre. With an h-index of 16 and 35 research outputs spanning from 2007 to 2025, she has established herself as a significant contributor to animal science research. Dr. Walsh plays a pivotal role in SETU's newly launched veterinary medicine program, which was announced in September 2024 as a major development for the South East region of Ireland and received endorsement from Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Factors affecting ovarian follicle development in cattle from University College Dublin (2012)
- Masters Degree in Agricultural Science from University College Dublin (2007)
- Bachelors Degree in BSc in Agricultural Science (Animal Science) from University College Dublin (2005)
Dr. Walsh's research spans animal reproduction, health, and sustainable agricultural practices. Her early work examined breed and feeding system impacts on milk production, udder health, and fertility in Irish dairy systems using Holstein-Friesian cattle. She has expanded her focus to include Johne's disease awareness among farmers, sustainable waste management through composting innovations, and genetic decision tools for cattle production. Her work directly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable agriculture and responsible resource management.
Her recent publications demonstrate continued productivity through 2025, with research spanning dairy cattle reproduction, disease management, and environmental sustainability. This body of work shows increasing collaboration with international researchers and practical applications for Irish farming systems.
Dr. Walsh's scientific contributions have been formally recognized with the Teaching Hero Award in 2021. Her research aligns with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals focused on sustainable agriculture, responsible consumption, and life on land.
As an educator, Dr. Walsh teaches across all four undergraduate years, covering Animal Biology for first-years, Food Process Technology for second-years, Agricultural Science Industrial Placement coordination and Animal Breeding and Genetics for third-years, and advanced topics in Animal Health, Welfare and Behavior plus Applied Farm Management for fourth-years. She also supervises undergraduate research projects and serves as a key figure in SETU's new veterinary medicine initiative.
Through the Eco Innovation Research Centre, Dr. Walsh bridges agricultural science with environmental sustainability, focusing on practical solutions for Irish farming challenges while contributing to national veterinary education capacity through SETU's new multi-campus veterinary college.
