Dr. Siobhan Hearne is a Research Fellow in the History Department at the University of Manchester. She specializes in the history of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, focusing on health, gender, and sexuality. Currently, her Wellcome Trust-funded project examines the Soviet Red Cross's role in post-Stalin healthcare and global diplomacy. She previously held Leverhulme Fellowships at Durham University and the University of Latvia. Her work bridges state-society relations, humanitarianism, and peripheral histories.
Education: PhD in History from the University of Nottingham (2017).
Research Interests: Uses sexuality and health as lenses to explore state-society dynamics. Key areas include Soviet humanitarianism, prostitution regulation in late imperial Russia, and gender in military contexts. Her book Policing Prostitution won major prizes and examines state control over marginalized groups.
Publications: Includes articles on Soviet Red Cross diplomacy, AIDS responses in late USSR, and masculinity in Russian military history. Her forthcoming book Red Humanitarians reinterprets Soviet civil society's role in global humanitarian networks.
