Dr. Sinead Furey is a Senior Lecturer in Consumer Management and Food Innovation at the Department of Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management, Ulster University (Coleraine campus). Her expertise spans food poverty, retail food promotions, and social exclusion. She holds a PhD from Ulster University (2001) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Management Studies from Queen’s University Belfast (2005). As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she contributes to academic leadership and pedagogy.
Her research focuses on food poverty dynamics, including measurement methodologies, policy interventions, and the role of retail promotions. Key projects include a safefood-funded study on healthy food promotions in Ireland (£209,000) and a Food Standards Agency-funded investigation into Northern Ireland food retailer promotions (£108,000). She advises on policy through roles like Board member of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland and representative on the Belfast Food Network.
Dr. Furey teaches food policy, consumer law, and global food issues, integrating research into pedagogy. She supervises a PhD student developing food poverty indicators and advocates for evidence-based solutions to food insecurity. Her work bridges academia, policy, and practice, addressing systemic issues in food access and equity.
Notable awards include the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Her research has explored post-Brexit food regulatory challenges, media framing of food poverty, and the impact of food promotions on consumer behavior.
