Sindee L. Simon is a Distinguished Professor and Department Head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University. She holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Yale University (1983) and a Ph.D. from Princeton University (1992). Before joining NC State, she held positions at the University of Pittsburgh and Texas Tech University, where she served as Chair of Chemical Engineering and earned the P. W. Horn Distinguished Professorship.
Her research focuses on polymer physics, glass-forming materials, and nanotechnology. Key areas include polymerization kinetics at the nanoscale, glass transition dynamics, and thermal analysis techniques like Flash DSC. She has over 135 journal publications and an h-index of 41.
Simon has received numerous awards, including the Society of Plastics Engineers International Award (2019)—the first woman to win this honor—and Fellowships from the American Physical Society, AAAS, and multiple engineering societies. Her work bridges fundamental science and applications in materials engineering.
Her educational background and industry experience (Beech Aircraft, 1983–1986) inform her research on materials under confinement and extreme conditions. She collaborates on projects involving explosives, ionic liquids, and nanocomposites.
