Dr. Sinah Kloß is a Visiting Professor of Anthropology of the Americas at the University of Bonn, Germany. She leads the Research Group 'Marking Power: Embodied Dependencies, Haptic Regimes and Body Modification' at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS). Her work focuses on the anthropology of reproduction, medical anthropology, sensory anthropology, body politics, New Materialism, and Caribbean studies with a regional emphasis on Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad.
Her research explores embodied dependencies, material religion, and the intersection of gender, migration, and postcolonial theory. Kloß has held visiting research positions and contributed to editorial boards, including co-editing the Brill book series The Early Americas: History and Culture. She has secured third-party funding for her interdisciplinary projects and engages in public outreach through podcasts like 'Tätowierungen: Tattoos als Instrumente der Macht.'
Kloß's recent publications include co-editing Transforming Spirit Bodies: Materialization and Embodied Dependencies in South America (2025) and publishing in journals like Body & Society and Material Religion. Her work bridges academic research with public engagement, addressing themes of embodiment, power dynamics, and cultural memory.
Her advisory and collaborative efforts include mentoring through the BCDSS and contributing to interdisciplinary initiatives at the Global South Studies Center. Kloß’s research also examines the role of ethnography in addressing intersectional identities and global inequities.
