Prof. Simon Verhulst is a Professor of the Evolutionary Biology of Ageing at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, within the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences. His research focuses on telomere dynamics, life history evolution, and the evolutionary mechanisms underlying aging in birds and other organisms. He has held editorial roles at journals including Journal of Avian Biology and Frontiers in Zoology, and received notable grants like the Vici-grant (2004) and membership in the Young Academy (De Jonge Akademie, 2005).
Verhulst’s educational background includes a PhD from the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (1995), followed by postdoctoral research at the Universities of Bristol, Oxford, and Uppsala. His work integrates ecology, genetics, and physiology to study aging, stress responses, and environmental impacts on health and lifespan. Key areas include telomere length’s role in disease susceptibility, immune function, and reproductive trade-offs.
- Research Themes: Telomere biology, avian behavior, immunosenescence, developmental plasticity.
- Grants & Awards: Vici Grant (2004), Open Research Award 2024, NWO Grants.
- Teaching: Behavioral Biology, Molecular Biology of Aging, Evolutionary Life History Strategies.
- Lab Team: Supervises PhD/postdoc projects on topics like sleep physiology, robotic predator effects, and epigenetic aging.
His recent work explores how early-life adversity impacts telomere length and immune function, with implications for conservation and human health. Collaborations span ornithology, immunology, and robotics, addressing applied challenges like bird-strike prevention using robotic falcons.
