Professor Simon Smith is a Research Professor at the Child Health Research Centre, University of Queensland, affiliated with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families Over the Lifecourse and the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child. His roles include UQ Node Director for both ARC Centres, focusing on improving sleep health and addressing childhood disadvantage. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Monash University, a Master of Science from the University of Melbourne, and a PhD from the University of Melbourne.
His research spans sleep’s role in child development, sleep disorders, and the impact of digital technology on sleep. Collaborations include work on sleep and disasters, mental health, and wearable technology. He has led over 287 works, including studies on sleep interventions, sleep apnea, and the relationship between sleep and chronic pain. His grants include NHMRC, ARC, and NIH funding for projects like Indigenous sleep health programs and sleep’s role in back pain.
Supervision includes PhD students on topics like sleep technology impacts and Indigenous sleep coaching. His work bridges clinical and community engagement, emphasizing co-design with families and Indigenous communities.
