Simon Pickering is a Research Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath, affiliated with the IAAPS (Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems). His work focuses on engine design, fuel systems, and non-destructive testing, with contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to affordable and clean energy and industry innovation.
He has been involved in six major research projects funded by Innovate UK and industry partners, including work on hybrid powertrains, greenhouse gas reduction, and engine optimization tools. Notable projects include CHAMP Methanol Hybrid Rib (2021-2022) and DYNAMO (2017-2021), which addressed transient engine behavior and multiobjective design problems.
His research interests span machine learning applications (e.g., driving style classification via support vector clustering) and advanced non-destructive testing techniques like thermographic NDE systems. Pickering’s publications bridge theoretical methodologies with practical engineering challenges in transportation and materials science.
He collaborates extensively with industry partners such as SAIC Motor UK and has contributed to 48 research outputs, including peer-reviewed articles and conference proceedings. His work emphasizes sustainable technologies and data-driven solutions for automotive systems.
