Simon J. Smith (US/UK) serves as a Visiting Professor in the EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies Department at the College of Europe in Bruges. He concurrently holds an Associate Professorship at the Royal Danish Defence College in Copenhagen and is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for War and Society, San Diego State University. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Defence Studies. Previously, he was affiliated with Staffordshire University.
His research focuses on the strategic relationship between the EU and NATO, drivers of European defence transformation, and UK constitutional matters related to defence. Current research explores collective security implications of space deterrence and contemporary extended deterrence strategies. Smith has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and engages widely with academic and governmental institutions globally.
He holds a PhD in International Relations from Loughborough University and an MSc in International Conflict and Cooperation from the University of Stirling. Smith frequently contributes to media outlets like the BBC and European Leadership Network, and has presented at institutions including the US Army War College and the Royal College of Defence Studies.
