Simon Huttegger is Chancellor’s Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California, Irvine. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Salzburg (2006) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research. His research focuses on game theory, decision theory, philosophy of science, probability foundations, and philosophy of biology. He co-edits The Review of Symbolic Logic and was awarded a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship. His work bridges formal methods with philosophical inquiry, addressing topics like rational learning, causal decision theory, and evolutionary signaling dynamics.
Research interests include:
- Dynamic consistency in belief revision
- Symmetry principles in evolutionary models
- Interactions between causal and evidential decision theories
- Philosophical foundations of probability
- Evolution of communication systems
Publications reflect a focus on formal approaches to decision-making, evolutionary processes, and scientific reasoning. Recent work emphasizes reconciling causal/evidential theories and exploring structural stability in decision frameworks. His 2017 book The Probabilistic Foundations of Rational Learning develops a generalized Bayesian framework for rational learning processes.
Teaching covers logic, Bayesian epistemology, philosophy of biology, and graduate seminars on advanced topics. He contributes to UCI’s Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program and maintains active research collaborations across disciplines.
