Simon Fisher is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Dalhousie University. His research focuses on the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in 20th-century American history, with particular emphasis on African American communities, queer and transgender studies, and social justice movements.
- Education: PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, MA in Interdisciplinary Humanities from the University of Chicago, BA in English Literature/Women’s Studies from DePaul University.
Dr. Fisher's scholarly work examines marginalized voices in U.S. history, notably through critical analysis of figures like Pauli Murray and the New Negro Movement. His publications explore how race and gender were navigated during the Jim Crow era and how trans temporalities reshape historical narratives.
Selected Publications Trends: His work spans historical analysis of transgender identities, queer historiography, and interdisciplinary approaches to African American and gender studies. Key themes include social justice, colonial/post-colonial contexts, and cultural temporalities.
He teaches courses such as Making Gender: Sex & Gender from the American Revolution, Social Justice in US History, and US Colonialism and Post-colonialism. Office hours are held Tuesdays 1:30-2:30 or by appointment.
