Simon E. Fisher

Simon E. Fisher is a Professor of Language and Genetics at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. He holds a joint appointment at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition & Behaviour. Fisher earned his Natural Sciences degree from Cambridge University and his DPhil in Genetics from Oxford University. His research focuses on the genetic and neurobiological basis of language, particularly through the discovery of the FOXP2 gene, the first gene linked to speech and language impairment.

Key research interests include integrating genetics, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology to understand language development, disorders, and evolution. He has pioneered interdisciplinary studies on FOXP2’s role in speech, motor learning, and neurodevelopmental disorders like autism. His work spans animal models (songbirds, mice), human genetics, and clinical studies.

Fisher has authored over 260 articles in top journals such as Nature, Science, and Cell, with an h-index of 96. Awards include the Francis Crick Medal (2008) and the Eric Kandel Prize (2009). He frequently lectures globally and leads initiatives like the Nijmegen Cognomics Project, which integrates genomics and neuroimaging.

His academic leadership includes directing the Language and Genetics Department at the Max Planck Institute since 2010 and serving as Isobel Laing Fellow at Oxford University (2007–2010). Fisher’s lab collaborates widely, bridging clinical, evolutionary, and cognitive research domains.
