Simon Cullen is a Research Fellow and Artificial Intelligence and Education Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He is a founding co-chair of CMU's Heterodox Community and developer of the university's 'Dangerous Ideas in Science and Society' course. His work focuses on improving reasoning, open-mindedness, and cross-partisan communication through AI-driven tools, experimental methods, and innovative educational frameworks.
Research interests span cognitive science, computer science, and philosophy, with emphasis on AI applications to enhance group reasoning, depolarize political discourse, and foster intellectual independence. His projects include argument visualization, market-based moderation systems, and AI-scaffolded discussion facilitation.
As a Dean's Innovation Scholar, he experimentally tests AI technologies to strengthen open inquiry across academic and public spheres. Notably holds dual fellowships at CMU recognizing his contributions to AI in education and institutional innovation.
