Simon Cox is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Aberystwyth University. He graduated with a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Warwick (1994) and earned his PhD from the University of East Anglia (1998), focusing on wave-induced pressures on coastal structures. His research spans foam rheology, microfluidics, biological morphology, and porous media flow.
- Academic Appointments: Lecturer (2005), Reader (2010), Personal Chair (2010)
- Major Projects: EPSRC Fellowship (2006-2011), ESA Hydrodynamics of Wet Foams (2020-2023), Welsh Government Sclerotherapy Optimization (2023-2025)
His research on foam rheology uses the Surface Evolver to model bubble-scale dynamics, while his biological morphology work connects sea urchin structures to foam packing principles. Recent projects focus on microfluidic modeling of geological porous media and medical foam applications.
Key research trends from 2016-2025 include computational modeling of foam flow in complex geometries, capillary pressure analysis, and surfactant transport in dry foams. His work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to energy and clean water through porous media studies.
- Scientific Awards: EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (2006-2011), Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (2013), Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2016)
As Head of Department (2014-2024), he led mathematical research initiatives. His supervised work includes 135 research outputs and collaborations across Europe, with equipment like the Surface Evolver and rheometers.
