Simon Coles is a Professor of Structural Chemistry at the University of Southampton, where he serves as Director of both the UK National Crystallography Service (NCS) and the UK Physical Sciences Data-science Service (PSDS). He has authored approximately 1000 papers and is a leading figure in chemical crystallography, with significant contributions to the Cambridge Structural Database.
- National Crystallography Service (NCS)
- Physical Sciences Data-science Service (PSDS)
- Editorial Board Member - Crystallography Reviews, Supramolecular Chemistry, Cryst.Eng.Comm, IUCr RawDataLetters
His research spans Structural Chemistry (mechanisms of solid-state reactions, structure-property relationships, quantum mechanical calculations) and Digital Chemistry (data management, semantic web approaches, electronic laboratory notebooks). Collaborations extend to biology, engineering, and computer science, with funding from EPSRC, JISC, and Microsoft.
Recent publications highlight his work in crystallography (2025), data science (2025), and materials characterization (2025). The themes of structural analysis, data-driven approaches, and interdisciplinary applications dominate his scholarly output.
As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he contributes to MSc programme development and national education initiatives through the British Crystallographic Association. His supervision includes a diverse cohort of PhD and MSc students in chemistry-related fields.
