Simon Clark is a Professor at Macquarie University's School of Engineering within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, where he has served since 2012 as Deputy Head of Department and leader of the successful SmartCrete Cooperative Research Centre bid. His career bridges academic research and national laboratories with extensive international collaborations.
Research Interests: Professor Clark specializes in Earth Science and Materials Engineering, with world-recognized expertise in Synchrotron Radiation, Neutron Scattering and Imaging, High-Pressure Science, and Cement/Concrete Technology. His work leverages X-ray Diffraction and extreme-condition experimentation to study material properties, particularly electrical conductivity in geological formations and engineered materials.
Publication Trends: Analysis of his 2022-2023 outputs reveals dominant themes in neutron imaging optimization, electrical conductivity under extreme conditions, and concrete degradation mechanisms. His research consistently integrates advanced instrumentation with computational modeling to address complex materials science and geophysical challenges.
Advising and Funding: He supervises PhD candidates including Samaya Manthri Patabendi Gedara (ANSTO Scholarship project). Major grants include the SmartCrete CRC (2020-2027), ARENA-funded steelmaking slag upcycling initiative (2024-2030), and Transport for NSW concrete crack monitoring project (2022-2026) involving multi-institutional teams.
Research Infrastructure: Professor Clark maintains active partnerships with ANSTO and international neutron/synchrotron facilities, leading teams focused on sustainable construction materials development and high-pressure experimental methodologies for Earth science applications.
