Silvio Contessi

Silvio Contessi is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at Monash Business School. He holds a PhD in Economics from Johns Hopkins University (2008) and previously worked as a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (2008-2015) and adjunct lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis (2012-2015).

• Affiliations: Research Associate at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas’ Globalization and Monetary Policy Institute; Monash Center for Development Economics and Sustainability.
• Education: PhD in Economics (Johns Hopkins, 2008), MA in Economics (Johns Hopkins, 2004), BA/MA from Bocconi University (Milan, 1999).

Research Interests: Focus on banking, macro-finance, and international finance. Key projects include studying gross credit flows and their macroeconomic impacts (Australian Research Council Discovery Project, 2019-2023). Recent work addresses systemic risk, pandemic market collapses, and financial stability.

Awards: 2017 Dean’s Commendation for Excellence in Teaching; 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award (JHU); Bocconi Golden Medal (1999).

Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD students in finance and econometrics. Secured AUD 239,000 for his ARC project. Active in Monash’s Banking Reading Group and academic committees.

Labs/Teams: Leads research initiatives at Monash Business School, collaborating with global institutions on banking dynamics and development economics.
