معرفی
Silvia Messina is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in General Neurology and Acute General Neurology at the University of Oxford Medical School. She serves as an honorary consultant for the Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Trials Unit and works as a neurology consultant at Frimley Health Foundation Trust, providing neurological care for MS and acute neurology patients.
Dr. Messina graduated and trained as a neurologist at the University of Catania, Italy, where she also served as a clinical lecturer for the Multiple Sclerosis service. She has a background in neuroimmunology and previously worked as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School. She later served as the clinical NMO fellow in the Oxford NMO service, managing one of the largest global cohorts of NMOSD-AQP4, MOGAD, and seronegative NMOSD patients.
Her research focuses on the use of non-conventional MRI in NMOSD and MOGAD to define their pathogenesis and explore clinical and laboratory correlates. She actively supports research within the NMO service and is involved in developing a clinical-imaging platform that integrates imaging from multiple sites. Her work bridges neuroimaging, clinical research, and neuroimmunology to advance understanding of demyelinating diseases.
Dr. Messina participates in several international collaborations, including the International Panel for NMO Diagnosis (IPND) task force as a neuroimaging expert, contributing to the development of the 2025 NMOSD diagnostic criteria. She is also part of the European NMO (MEDEN) group and has been a member of the MAGNIMS network since 2016, contributing to collaborative MRI studies.
As a member of the Oxford Brain Bank Access and Management Committees, she represents demyelinating diseases. She serves as a bedside tutor, OSCE examiner, and facilitator in 'patient-expert sessions' for the neuroscience teaching faculty at the University of Oxford Medical School since August 2023.
