Silvia Martinez Subiela

Silvia Martinez Subiela is a Professor at the Department of Animal Medicine and Surgery, affiliated with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Murcia. Her research focuses on developing salivary biomarkers for diagnostic applications in veterinary medicine, particularly in farm animals like pigs and horses, as well as companion animals such as dogs and cats. She leads the Interlab-UMU interdisciplinary laboratory and has contributed to the validation of assays for acute-phase proteins, stress hormones, and inflammatory markers in saliva.

Her educational background includes a doctoral degree from the University of Murcia (2003), where she studied analytical and clinical validation of acute-phase proteins in dogs. She has also been involved in collaborative research on Neospora caninum epidemiology in sheep and mouflon in southern Spain.

Research interests include non-invasive diagnostic techniques, One Health concepts, and the application of proteomics to understand disease mechanisms. Her work bridges basic science and clinical practice, with a focus on improving animal welfare through precision diagnostics. Recent studies explore the use of saliva for rapid disease detection in pigs and horses, including sepsis, gastric ulcers, and reproductive stress.

Dr. Subiela has published extensively on salivary biomarkers, oxytocin assays, and the validation of diagnostic methods for infectious diseases like PRRS and Toxoplasmosis. Her research emphasizes translational applications, such as point-of-care tests for farm animals and improved understanding of human-animal health interfaces through One Health frameworks.

She contributes to veterinary education through innovative active learning methodologies like the Jigsaw technique and interdisciplinary collaborations with communication students to enhance veterinary students' communication skills. Her work also extends to teaching critical thinking and clinical decision-making in veterinary practice.
