Silvia Ferrini is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia (UEA), and a member of CSERGE (Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment) and the Collaborative Centre for Sustainable Use of the Seas. She holds a MSc in Environmental Economics from the University of Siena (Italy) and a PhD in Applied Statistics from the University of Florence (Italy). Her career includes roles as a Senior Research Associate at CSERGE (2007–2009) and Lecturer in Economics at the University of Siena (tenured from 2012).
Her research focuses on ecosystem services valuation, natural capital accounting, and sustainable development. Key projects include the MARine Biodiversity project (Horizon Europe-funded, 2022–2026), the GROW Colombia initiative (BBSRC-funded, 2020–2022), and the Pyramids of Life project (NERC-funded, 2021–2026). She actively contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those addressing climate action, biodiversity, and poverty reduction.
Her work integrates economic methodologies with ecological data to inform policy decisions. Recent projects emphasize bioeconomy transitions, marine ecosystem valuation, and climate-smart policies. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Ecological Economics and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Ferrini supervises PhD students in ecosystem service management and collaborates with international organizations to bridge scientific research with practical applications. She is also involved in consultancy work, such as the South Staffordshire Water Advisory project (2022–2022).
