Silvia Bruzzone is Associate Professor in Industrial Economics and Organization at Mälardalen University (MDU), affiliated with the Academy of Economics, Society and Technology and Department of Organization and Management (also known as Department of Engineering, Business and Society - EST). She serves as member of the New Management Practices (NMP) research group and subject responsible for the Master Program in Civil Engineering and Management (Indek).
Her academic background includes:
- PhD in Urban Studies (University of Milan and Humboldt University Berlin), focusing on project-based organizing and time dialectics in green space development
- Over 10 years as research fellow in French institutions including Curapp-CNRS (political science), CITERES (urban planning), and Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées-ENPC (engineering)
- Visiting researcher positions at Flood Hazard Research Center (Middlesex University London) and Humboldt University Berlin
Professor Bruzzone's research is grounded in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and Practice-Based Studies, conceptualizing organizing as sociomaterial practices where knowledge emerges from local interactions. She maintains a multidisciplinary perspective developed through collaborations with law scholars and engineers, focusing on innovation processes in environmental and social sustainability. Her specific expertise spans urban sustainability (water and waste management, climate change adaptation) and risk management (flooding, stormwater pollution, forest fires).
Her current research includes the Vinnova-funded BAIT project (Better Waste Management with IoT), examining waste management through Internet of Things technologies. This extends her longstanding interest in sociomaterial aspects of technological implementation in sustainability contexts.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a clear trajectory toward posthumanist perspectives that challenge traditional human-centered approaches to environmental management. Her work increasingly incorporates creative and embodied methodologies, including dance and arts-based practices, to explore urban sustainability issues through the lens of everyday practices rather than purely technical solutions.
Professor Bruzzone has participated in European projects including Starflood (FP7) and maintains active scholarly profiles on Google Scholar, ORCID, and ResearchGate. Her teaching responsibilities include oversight of the Master Program in Civil Engineering and Management, where she integrates her research interests in sociomaterial practices and sustainability into the curriculum.
