Dr Silvia Avram serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Essex's Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER), where she conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of sociology of work, social policy, and labor economics. Her work is frequently published through CeMPA Working Papers and ISER publications, with recent collaborations involving the Low Pay Commission and EU policy evaluations.
Her research focuses on structural mechanisms of economic inequality, particularly gender pay gaps and intra-household resource distribution. Key interests include:
- Commuting costs and gender wage disparities
- Job mobility barriers for women
- Wage progression out of low-paid work
- Public policy impacts on reservation wages
- Debt vulnerability and transmission between partners
- Microsimulation methods for policy evaluation
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2015-2025) reveals consistent focus on gendered labor market outcomes, with increasing emphasis on pandemic-era inequality and cross-national EU comparisons. Her methodological approach combines microsimulation techniques with labor economics frameworks to assess tax-benefit system impacts.
Dr Avram actively disseminates findings through policy reports for the Low Pay Commission, academic blogs, and media engagements including German-language outlets addressing women's poverty risks. Her work demonstrates strong policy relevance with direct applications to UK and EU social security systems.
She co-leads research projects with prominent collaborators including Susan Harkness (University of Essex) and Daria Popova (University of Luxembourg), often through ISER's multidisciplinary research environment which provides access to longitudinal datasets and microsimulation platforms.
