Silja Häusermann is a Full Professor of Swiss Politics and Comparative Political Economy at the Department of Political Science within the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Zurich. She teaches courses on Swiss politics, comparative political economy, comparative politics, and welfare state research. Her academic appointments include teaching Political Systems and Theories I, Swiss Politics, Publication Seminar, and the CIS Research Colloquium for the 2025 academic year.
Professor Häusermann's research focuses on comparative politics, comparative political economy, and political behavior. Specifically, she studies socio-structural change, electoral and party system change, and their impact on distributive policies, as well as inequality, the transformation of welfare state and labor market politics in advanced post-industrial democracies. Her work demonstrates a strong emphasis on the transformation of left politics and social democracy in knowledge societies.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on social democracy, welfare politics, party competition, and political cleavages in contemporary democracies. The research spans comparative analysis across Western democracies with particular attention to Swiss politics. Her work often examines how economic changes, inequality perceptions, and socio-structural transformations affect political behavior, party strategies, and welfare state reforms.
Professor Häusermann serves as Deputy Director of the UZH Research Priority Program Equality of Opportunities, co-directed with Professors David Dorn (economics) and Matthias Mahlmann (law). She leads a research group focused on distributive justice and conflict in capitalist democracies. Her academic collaborations span numerous institutions and involve extensive work with colleagues across Europe on projects examining political economy, welfare state transformation, and political behavior.
